Benefits of Therapy Animals

Several studies have found that being in the presence of a companion animal is associated with improvements in mental, social and physiologic health status. Because of their ability to reduce anxiety and stress, along with comforting people, therapy dogs are used in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and dental practices.

Q: “I want Buddy at my appointment. What do I do?”

A: Please let us know when you make your appointment so we can make sure Buddy will be at the office for your visit. He does have a trainer mandated off-day during the week and can also be away for training or grooming appointments, so it’s important to request him when you schedule your appointment.

Q: “What if my child is not comfortable around dogs?”

A: Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for you and your family is very important to us! Buddy is trained to remain in specific areas to be mindful of those who may be uncomfortable around dogs. Please let us know when you make your appointment if you do not want him for any reason and we will make sure Buddy is kept away from you during your visit.

Q: “Is it safe to have a therapy animal in dental health care settings?”

We completely understand your concern about keeping things clean and sterile with a dog in the office, and we do stay extra vigilant about office hygiene and infection control. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is no evidence to suggest that animals pose a more significant risk of transmitting infection than people; therefore, dogs do not have to be excluded from such areas. However, it is important to consider your comfort level with dogs and the type of procedure that is being completed. Your family and Dr. Kwak can discuss and decide if Buddy can accompany during your child’s visit.
